Bennett Shred Event copy

URBANA – To raise awareness and to promote prevention of rising consumer fraud and identity theft, State Senator Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) is inviting Champaign County residents to participate in a community-wide shred event.

Bennett is partnering with the Urbana Free Library to host a free document shredding event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the eastern parking lot of the former Urbana Civic Center on East Water Street.

“The secure disposal of old and unneeded financial records is an important part of protecting yourself from fraud and identity theft,” Bennett said. “I encourage families to take advantage of this free community shred event to safely dispose of unwanted papers containing personal information.”

To help reduce the chances of identity theft, experts recommend shredding things like bank statements, credit card offers and credit card convenience checks. Residents should also shred canceled credit cards, canceled checks, pay stubs, old photo IDs and tax returns that are more than three years old.

To accommodate all participants, each person will be limited to two boxes of residential shredding. Boxes and bags will be returned. Documents will be accepted for shredding until trucks reach capacity. No electronics will be accepted.

If residents have questions about the event, Bennett urges them to contact his office at 217-355-5252 or visit SenatorBennett.com.
